With chronic pain we know that the immune system is much more involved than we previously thought, specifically two types of immune cells: glial cells and mast cells.
Glial cells are the most abundant cells in the central nervous system. They support neurons, which are often considered the 'aristocrats' of the nervous system. Among the glial cells, oligodendrocytes wrap neurons in myelin, astrocytes maintain the environment for neuron communication, and microglia act as the cleanup crew, removing waste and dead neurons. However, microglia can also release inflammatory chemicals, contributing to chronic pain.
Mast cells are immune cells that travel throughout the body, responding to infections and injuries. While they play a crucial role in defending against pathogens, they can also overreact to non-threatening stimuli, releasing chemicals that exacerbate pain.
PEA, a substance naturally found in the body and in foods like egg yolk, peanuts, and soy lecithin, has been studied for its potential effects on reducing inflammation and sensitivity to pain. It acts as a signalling molecule produced by neurons and immune cells, helping regulate the release of inflammatory chemicals from mast cells. This could potentially help with pain management by reducing the overactivity of certain cells. Studies have looked into its potential effects on conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Sciatic Pain, Osteoarthritis, Lower Back Pain, Failed Back Surgery Syndrome, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
